Faculty Director: Daniel D. Schmelka, M.D.

Offered: All periods/one student per period

Purpose:  Increase knowledge of neurological and neurosurgical disorders and appropriate treatment plans.

Objectives of the Elective: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Obtain a neurologic history, perform a neurologic examination, and differentiate between common disorders affecting the nervous system.
  2. Know the roles of various specialized diagnostic procedures such as EEG, EMG, CAT scanning, angiography, and other neuroradiological studies in the evaluation of neurological and neurosurgical disorders.
  3. Describe the diagnostic approach to patients with neurological and neurosurgical disorders and to learn to develop treatment plans for patients with these disorders.
  4. Assist in the management of patients with neuroanatomical and neurophysiological disorders.
  5. Understand and/or describe the management of patients with neurological and neurosurgical disorders.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Diagnostic workups and special diagnostic procedures of assigned patients.
  2. Participation in clinical neurological/neurosurgical cases under the direction of the neurosurgeon.
  3. Postoperative care and management of neurosurgical patients.
  4. Evening rounds and emergency call as assigned by the preceptor.

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Assess by direct observation the ability of the student to obtain a satisfactory neurological history and perform a satisfactory neurological examination.
  2. Assess by direct observation the ability of the student to present a patient, discuss the differential diagnosis, propose a treatment plan, and document them in the history and physical exam and consult reports.
  3. Evaluate by direct observation the competency of the student in ordering appropriate diagnostic studies in the evaluation of neurological disorders.
  4. Evaluate by direct observation the ability of the student to correlate neurological signs and symptoms to the neuroanatomical and neuropathological process causing the abnormalities.
  5. Assess by direct observation the student's familiarity with current, pertinent literature and textbook description of common and unusual neurological disorders.
  6. Judge by direct observation the student's professional attitudes and behavior to medical staff and patients.
  7. Judge by direct observation the student's growth of knowledge in neurology and neurosurgery.
