The Study of Alcohol & Chemical Dependency

Offered: All periods/1 student per period.

Purpose:  To study and participate in evaluation and management of chemical dependency and its impact on individuals and families.

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the nature and diagnosis of chemical dependency including the signs and symptoms of the illness.
  2. Identify the special needs of various population groups.
  3. Participate in and develop the interdisciplinary care planning.
  4. Utilize various treatment options, including levels of care programs and appropriate intervention techniques.
  5. Describe the relapse dynamics of addiction.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Participation in all phases of treatment at Heartview Foundation including the admission, triage, group therapy, family programming, adult and adolescent levels of care.
  2. Attendance/participation at lectures, films, and video presentations; interdisciplinary treatment planning sessions including aftercare; and open alcoholic anonymous meetings.
  3. Participation in evening programming as assigned.

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Evaluate by direct observation or clinical chart review the student's ability to perform a complete history, physical, social, and assessment of alcohol and drug addiction problems by using the case history presentation.
  2. Judge by reviewing a short paper presentation, the student's knowledge of needs of special populations such as women, adolescents, Native Americans, and the elderly.
  3. Judge by direct observation or through role play, the student's ability to develop proper interventions and interdisciplinary treatment plans.
  4. Complete the standard UND fourth-year evaluation form, with particular attention to the skills obtained in the items listed above under "Criteria for Grading."

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Students will demonstrate through role play proper intervention techniques.
  2. Students will demonstrate discussions, participation, and triage an understanding of the criteria for treatment, special needs, and planning process.
