Offered: All periods/1 student per period

Purpose: To provide an opportunity for an advanced experience in neurological exam and in the evaluation and management of common neurological and neurosurgical patients.

ObjectivesFollowing successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competency in taking a complete history and neurological history, perform a neurological examination, and provide a differential diagnosis in the common disorders affecting the nervous system.
  2. Describe the roles of diagnostic procedures in the evaluation of neurological disorders, such as EMG, nerve conduction studies, evoked potential, CT scanning, angiography, EEG and other neuroradiological and electrodiagnostic studies in the evaluation of neurological disease.
  3. Describe the logical or orderly, sequential diagnostic approach in the evaluation of patients with neurological disorders, and the development of an appropriate treatment plan for such patients.
  4. Correlate the neurologic signs, symptoms and findings with the neuroanatomical and neurophysiological disorders in the development of an appropriate treatment plan.
  5. Improve management skills of patients with neurological disorders, both in the outpatient and in the inpatient setting.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Presentation and discussion of clinical neurological cases with attending faculty.
  2. Performance of complete physical examinations with emphasis on the neurological aspects of the case with a number of patients.
  3. Participation in rounds on a regular basis on the neurological service, neurological grand rounds; attendance at appropriate conferences.
  4. Participation on evening and weekend call schedule.

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Judge by direct observation and/or review of clinical records the student's ability to complete a physical examination with an emphasis on neurological aspects.
  2. Evaluate by direct observation, the student's ability to arrive at a proper differential diagnosis and formulate a proper treatment plan.
  3. Evaluate by direct observation and/or written reports, the student's ability to correlate the neurological signs and symptoms to the neuroanatomical and neuropathological location with the neurophysiological and neuropathological location of a lesion.
  4. Evaluate and review the student's ability to cite pertinent current literature relevant to common neurological disorders.
  5. Complete a mid-rotation formative feedback session with the student.
  6. Complete the standard UND fourth-year evaluation form with particular attention to the skills obtained in the items listed above under "Criteria for Grading."
