Objectives of the Elective:
-
To expose the senior medical student to small group facilitation and to
gain confidenc in their ability to oversee this group educational process.
-
To expose the senior medical student to the process of preparation and
presentation of lecture material in an academic setting.
-
To have the senior medical student feel confident in his/her use of current
data resources to research a given topic for presentation.
-
To allow the student be an active member of the medical education
team and to have them participate in any ongoing curriculum development.
Instructional Activities:
-
The student is required to co-facilitate a PCL group with a Ph.D. or M.D.
-
The student is required to attend all wrap-up and facilitator meetings.
-
The student will present a Step 1 board review topic or a review of an
academically or clinically relevant topic at a noon session for the students.
The topic must be approved by the course director before preparation, and
the date and time coordinated with the class and the Office of Medical
Education.
-
The student will participate as a laboratory teaching assistant as approved
by the PCL director (basic histology, pathology, anatomy, or microbiology.)
and the IPC director (clinical skills lab, IPC sessions for case presentations).

The student will write one new case for PCL (a "case-of-the-week"), beginning
early in the rotation, and working with the course director and/or the
PCL director.

The student will generate at least four MCQ test items (USMLE Step 1 format)
based upon PCL/IPC elective experience. Reference on NBME test question
construction is available from the course director.

The student will assist in teaching physical examination skills to first
and/or second-year medical students.

The student will generate at least one of the following options:
a. PCL/IPC lecture--the student will work closely with the Block
Directors (PCL/IPC) and faculty to choose a topic that is cohesive with
the current
schedule and within the student's knowledge base.
Suggested topics, but not limited to:

Basic science strengths
-
PDA uses and programs
-
Introduction to radiology; basic anatomic landmarks

Herbals in the news or other current topics of interest
-
Student/physician/nurse interactions (your place as a student on the wards.
b. Present an educational topic/case at noon conference at Altru.
c. Present wellness talks for faculty.
d. Assist in teaching physical examination to first-year students.
e. Critique case presentations by second-year students.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

The student participated and gained confidence in facilitation of PCL.
This will be evaluated by the PCL facilitator; evaluations to be forwarded
to the course director.

The student gained the skills required to prepare and present lecture material.
The course director (and PCL director as appropriate) will evaluate this
area of performance.

The student became comfortable using the appropriate resources for researching
a given topic. The course director (and PCL director as appropriate)
will evaluate this area of performance.

The student participated in relevant medical education staff meetings and
expressed his/her thoughts and ideas. The course director (and PCL
director as appropriate) will evaluate this area of performance.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Co-facilitator of PCL will evaluate the student's leadership skills and
interactions in small group facilitating.

The faculty director will provide feedback for the evaluation of the senior
medical student's given lecture, whether it is PCL, IPC, board review,
or noon conference.

The student will attend laboratory sessions pertaining to the material
covered that day. Feedback to the preceptor regarding the student's
participation in the lab will be provided by the lab instructors.

Assessment of other optional instructional activities will be evaluated
on an individual basis. Constructive feedback will be provided by
the faculty.

The faculty director will assign the grade and provide written feedback
to the Office of Medical Education and Campus Dean.
