NORWEGIAN OB/GYN ULTRASOUND

Objectives of the Elective:

  1. This elective is primarily designed for the student considering a residency in family practice or obstetrics and gynecology, or who is strongly motivated to acquire additional OB/GYN ultrasound skills on an international level.
  2. To learn basic concepts of ultrasound imaging and basic indications for OB/GYN scanning specifically.
  3. To learn how to scan with abdominal and vaginal state-of-the-art ultrasound techniques.
  4. To develop the ability to integrate features of ultrasound into the actual management of OB/GYN patients.
  5. To identify innovative OB/GYN ultrasound procedures, both for the benefit of the student's enhanced experience and so that curricular objectives can be maximized for the benefit of the student exchange program.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily participation in clinic, surgery, delivery, and hospital rounds as directed by the NTNU preceptor.  Attendance is mandatory.
  2. Individual rading fromm standard textbooks and scientific articless to supplement clinical material as directed by the NTNU preceptor.
  3. Attendance at regular OB/GYN Grand Rounds and other related OB/GYN meetings and NTNU conferences is expected.
  4. Other related activities, including research or fomal paper, at the discretion of th UND preceptor.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Student will be able to competently scan most patients after this elective without assistance required.
  2. The student will have daily assessment of clinical performance through case presentations and NTNU preceptor discussions.  The student will demonstrate knowledge of ultrasound scanning and clinical use of the information on a daily basis.
  3. Specific testing, formal or informal, of the student will be at the discretion of the NTNU preceptor.
The student will present an ultrasound lecture to UND third-year students to the innovations of Norwegian ultrasound technology and procedures.

Criteria for Grading:

Exchange students will be expected to participate in the clinical rotation as though they were a final student at NTNU.  The evaluation system established by the NTNU faculty of Medicine has been deemed appropriate by UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and upon a letter of recommendation by NTNU faculty preceptor, a final elective grade will be granted by the UND Department of Community Medicine.

To arrive at a satisfactory recommendation for the research elective the following must occur

  1. The goals of the rotation will be discussed with the student initially, intermittently throughout, and again at the end of the elective to assure their attainment and mutual satisfaction.
  2. The satisfactory completion of all assigned reading and research projects will be evaluated by the NTNU preceptor.  Deficiencies must be remedied before the completion of the elective.
  3. Student attendance, attitude, contribution to the health care team, as well as acceptable progress in clinical skills and knowledge will be considered by the NTNU preceptor in determining a satisfactory evaluative recommendation.
  4. The student will submit to the UND Department of Community Medicine, the UND faculty preceptor, and their campus dean a copy of the NTNU preceptor's evaluation letter.
Special Note:

The Vice Dean for Education, NTNU and the Chairman of Community Medicine and the UND Chairman of Community Medcine will work together jointly in making this a positive growth experience for students interested in OB/GYN ultrasound on an international scope.
