Objectives of the Elective:

  1. The student will develop the skills to evaluate patients presenting with common metabolic and endocrine disorders.
  2. The student will see a wide variety of general internal medicine patients and participate in their evaluation and management.

Instructional Activities:

  1. The student will demonstrate his ability to utilize the endocrine laboratory for aid in diagnosis by writing lab orders for patients with metabolic and endocrine disorders.
  2. The student will demonstrate by discussion with the preceptor an understanding of the basic pathophysiology, treatment and management of common endocrine disease processes as seen in patients worked up by the student.

Standards of performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Students will be asked to keep a record of patients encountered.
  2. Discussions will be held concerning each patient seen by the student.
  3. Students will be asked to read specific materials and these will be discussed with the preceptor.
  4. A final written evaluation will be submitted to the assistant dean of the northwest campus and the student upon completion of the elective.
