Rural Internal Medicine

Offered: All periods-1 student/period
Purpose: This elective will provide a typical rural general
internal medicine experience, including the inpatient setting (general hospital,
intensive care, emergency room), and the outpatient setting (clinic, urgent
care). The faculty involved must approve the specific assignment.
Objectives of the Elective: Following successful completion
of this elective, the student will be able to:
- Continue building an internal medicine core knowledge base by participating in
patient-centered learning.
- Participate actively in an established rural Internal Medicine practice to
learn the excitement and stimulation of the breadth of the disease
management process.
- Understand the critical elements of the decision-making process as it
relates to patients requiring care outside the community, including
communication with and transfer of patients to the care of accepting
physicians elsewhere.
- Interact with other medical personnel and understand the need for
interprofessional collaboration in the delivery of medical care.
- Gain exposure to pediatrics, orthopedics, and
other non-internal medicine problems encountered by the rural health care
professional.
Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student
will be involved in/experience:
- Functioning as an intern under the close supervision of the full-time
medical staff with graded responsibility. This would include evaluating,
diagnosing, and treating selected patients after consultation with the
attending staff.
- "Call" with faculty member.
- Participation in Internal Medicine/Family Practice conferences, weekly
"Grand Rounds," and the available CME teleconferences.
- Self-study of multiple internal medicine topics.
- Daily rounds on the inpatient service as well as the outpatient clinic.
Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the
preceptor will:
- Judge by direct observation the student's ability to perform a history and
physical exam, and formulate appropriate assessment and treatment plans.
- Evaluate the student's documentation in the medical record (written history
and physical examinations, discharge summaries, and progress notes).
- Evaluate the student's oral case presentations.
- Evaluate by direct observation the student's performance in clinical
skills and in procedures made available by the preceptor.
- Complete the UND 4th year elective evaluation form with particular attention
to the Criteria for Grading.
