Positions: One per period
Objectives of the Elective:
- Detailed history taking with organization of presentation bearing clinical
picture of patient in mind--to be able to perform a thorough physical examination
and put together lab and x-ray data with patient's clinical condition.
- Management of common medical inpatient problems--primarily based on
clinical material available--but generally, management of uncomplicated
and complicated myocardial infarction, CHF, COPD, community acquired and
nosocomial injections, principles of antibiotic therapy, the care of the
geriatric patient; standard workup of hematological oncologic conditions.
- Outpatient follow-up of hypertension, diabetes, thyroid illnesses,
"the annual physical exam," office cancer screening procedures,
and outpatient management of depression (anxiety, etc.).
- General idea as to the scope of internal medicine in a rural setting,
the art of triage and the patient/person/physician relationship.
Instructional Activities:
- Didactic sessions daily to cover above conditions and/or student's
choice of topics with appropriate reference data.
- ECG reading sessions.
- Exposure to certain lab techniques with didactic session on blood banking,
transfusion reactions, principles of culture and sensitivity testing--about
a two-hour refresher session.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
- Complete history and physicals on two or three patients per week submitted
in writing and reviewed thoroughly with student.
- Clinical quiz on topics covered during rotation during and at the end
of the period. A written test will be given at the end of the rotation.
- Conference with student regarding areas of weakness and scope of improvement.
- A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant
dean for the appropriate campus.
