Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Develop and refine student skills in general history taking, physical examination, and plans for patient management.
  2. Provide the student the opportunity to act and function as a resident with order counter signature.
  3. Allow the student exposure and practice in selected procedures.
  4. Develop student skills in reporting, interpretation, and management of internal medicine patients.
  5. Demonstrate skills in evidence-based medicine.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Written histories and physicals on two to three inpatients per week on the medical service.
  2. Presentation of all patients assigned to the student on admission and subsequent follow-up to the attending.
  3. Attendance at morning report, noon conferences, autopsies, and subspecialty conferences when available.
  4. Review of selected references and a major medical text to support an evidence-based perspective of patient management.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Satisfactory or higher performance on patient write-ups as judged by attending and documented on evalulation form.
  2. Satisfactory or higher performance on presentations and activities during attending rounds and preceptor sessions judged by attending and documented on evaluation form.
  3. Satisfactory or higher performance on UND School of medicine & Health Sciences 4th-year standard evaluation form.
