Hospital Medicine/Hospitalist Experience

           

Location of Acting Internship:          Trinity Hospital

 

Preceptor(s):              Maya Dillas, MD

 

Period(s) offered and number of students per period:         All periods; 2 students/period

 

Purpose:         To gain knowledge in the acute care of hospitalized patients.

 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this acting internship, the student will be able to:

 

1. Evaluate acute medical patients admitted to the hospital, with follow up through discharge.

2. Participate in preoperative evaluation and postoperative management of acute surgical cases.

3. Perform a complete history and physical examination with knowledge of differential diagnosis skills.

4. Outline discharge planning, including assessment of level of care required post discharge for prevention

    of recurrence of disease.

 

Instructional Activities: During this acting internship, students will be involved in/experience:

 

1. The students will do dictation of admission and progress notes as well as admission and discharge

    planning of patients admitted to the hospitalist service.

2. The student will present case presentations to the preceptor in succinct and pertinent way demonstrating

    good patient/physician relationship.

3. The student will attend rounds, meet with the preceptor to discuss cases, will attend noon conferences and

    complete required readings as assigned.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this acting internship, the preceptor will:

 

1. By direct observation, judge the student’s ability to perform an appropriate history and physical

    examination.

2. By direct observation and discussion, judge the student’s level of proficiency in diagnosis and treatment

    of acute care patients on the hospital service.

3. Following completion of the Acting Internship, complete the evaluation form and forward it to

    the Assistant Dean of the Northwest Campus.
