Objectives of the Elective:

  1. The student will experience a multidisciplinary approach to critical care in an ICU setting.
  2. The student will provide care to and be responsible for all admissions to a busy ICU and will be under the direction of physicians from a broad range of specialties to include anesthesiology, cardiology, cardiac surgery, pulmonary, general and trauma surgery and neurosurgery.
  3. The clinical experience will be directed by a critical care specialist and will encompass all areas of cardiac, respiratory and general physiology as well as training in the placement and use of hemodynamic monitoring lines, ventilators, inotropic medications, and other tools of the ICU.

Instructional Activities:

  1. The student will perform initial assessments of all ICU admissions and will assist in histories, physical examinations, and consultations.
  2. The student will round with a broad range of physicians, but will also be under the direct supervision of a critical care specialist.
  3. The student will function as a sub-intern and will assume increasing responsibility for patient care under the guidance of the attending physician.
  4. The student will be given a reading list and participate in small group didactic lectures.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. In daily 1:1 sessions the student will be evaluated on his/her understanding of physiological principles as they apply to the patients on the service.
  2. A written evaluation of the student's performance will be presented to the assistant dean of the Northwest Campus and discussed with the student.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Patient management.
  2. Basic science knowledge.
  3. Clinical ability.
