Objectives of the Elective:

Renal physiology review.
-
Acute renal failure: diagnosis, pathophysiology, and management.
-
Chronic renal failure: management of the disease progression and its complications.
-
Dialysis--indications.
-
Hypertension: clinical assessment, diagnostic investigation, and management.
-
Fluid/electrolyte acid-base metabolism.
-
Renal calculi: assessment and management.
-
Diabetes mellitus: assessment, management, and treatment of complications.
Instructional Activities:
-
Work-up/evaluations of hospitalized patients.
-
Evaluation of certain clinic patients.
-
Preparation of assigned topics and selected readings.
-
Active participation in the activities of an outpatient diabetic center.
Standards of Performance Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
Quality of dictations and daily progress notes, which will be reviewed.

Tutorials.
-
Improvements shown by students in clinical skills and understanding of
pathophysiological concepts.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Student must be capable of satisfactory case presentations, both written
and oral.
-
Student must be capable of competent physician/patient and physician/hospital
staff relationships.
-
Student must demonstrate an improvement in knowledge base.
