Objectives of the Elective:
-
Learn the appropriate history and physical examination for patients with
gastrointestinal disorders.

To obtain an indepth experience on the approach to common gastrointestinal
problems.

To learn indications for endoscopic procedures.
-
To learn basic endoscopic techniques; i.e., proctosigmoidoscopy.
Instructional Activities:
-
Daily teaching rounds.
-
Regular reading assignments.
-
Assisting and observing endoscopic procedures.
-
Outpatient experience as time permits.
Standards of Performance Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
The student will perform history and physical on patients admitted to the
hospital as well as patients undergoing outpatient endoscopic procedures.

The histories and physicals will be critically reviewed by the preceptor.

The student will be assigned reading topics twice a week during his preceptorship.
-
A written evaluation will be presented to the student and the assistant
dean of the appropriate campus on completion of the course.
