Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Approach to patients with renal disease including acid/base balance, electrolytes, and fluid evaluation and management.
  2. Evaluation and management of acute and chronic renal failure.
  3. End stage renal disease:  Student will become acquainted with difficult modalities of renal replacement therapy, particularly home dialysis, in addition to hemodyalsis and kidney transplant followup.
  4. Overview of glomerular disease, including diabetic nephropathy
  5. Evaluation and management of hypertension..

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily hospital and dialysis rounds.
  2. Evaluation and work-up of both hospital and clinic consultations.
  3. Follow-up of selected clinic patients.
  4. Attend peritoneal dialysis training with the dialysis nursing staff; evaluate peritoneal dialysis patients in the clinic and hospital.
  5. Didactic sessions, assigned readings, and case study reviews.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Notes and dictations will be reviewed.  Stress identifying differential diagnosis, problem lists and plan.
  2. Review assigned readings.
  3. Informal case studies will address student preparation and understanding of basic concepts of acid/base and fluid/electrolyte metabolism.
  4. Monitoring progress of the student in making clinical decisions on modalities of renal replacement therapy.
  5. Progress of student's understanding general concepts addressed, in addition to pathophysiology and its clinical applications.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Motivation for evaluating and following up patients.  Student is expected to be busy to maximize clinical experience exposure.
  2. Must perform with high degree of professionalism regarding patient and staff interactions.
  3. Must show progress in understanding basic principles of nephrology.
  4. Performance in formal and informal case studies.
  5. Availability during the rotation is essential.
