Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To acquaint the student with malignant diseases to include solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.
  2. To learn the natural history of malignant diseases including paraneoplastic syndromes associated with malignancies.
  3. To learn appropriate therapies of common malignancies to include chemotherapy, hormonotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy.
  4. This would include rationale of using cancer drugs, as well as review of current literature in selected cases.
  5. To understand the philosophy and ethics associated in the treatment of the cancer patient with emphasis on pain management.
  6. Observing methods of administration of chemotherapy.
  7. Understand how clinical research is conducted.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Inpatient rounds.
  2. Office experience.
  3. Performance of procedures.
  4. Weekly tumor conferences.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Making rounds with preceptor, seeing current patients and new con-sultations, and reviewing student's work-ups.
  2. Attending weekly tumor board meetings and assessing case presentations and discussions.
  3. Outpatient experience in attending's office (as with #1).
  4. Observe and perform minor surgical procedures associated with oncology, with emphasis on bone marrow aspiration and biopsies.

Criteria for Grading:

A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant dean of the appropriate campus at the end of the rotation.
