Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Learn to diagnose and treat common general internal medicine diseases.
  2. Learn how to evaluate and treat diabetes mellitus.
  3. Learn how to evaluate and treat thyroid disease.
  4. Learn how to evaluate pituitary/adrenal disorders.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Weekly topic presented by: a) student to preceptor; b) preceptor to student.
  2. Three papers (selected by preceptor) on appropriate endocrine topics.
  3. Interaction on ward rounds and with clinic patients.

Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Discussion of diabetes topics.
  2. Discussion of thyroid topics.
  3. Discussion of pituitary/adrenal evaluation.
  4. Discussion of general medicine topics.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Weekly presentation of a general medicine/endocrine topic.
  2. Patient work-ups including histories, physicals, daily notes, and discharge summaries.
  3. Student participation/timeliness/enthusiasm.
