CARDIAC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY

Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To provide the student interaction in Cardiology exposure to interpretation of cardiac electrophysiology; i.e., EKG, etc.
  2. Exposure to selective patients with cardiac arrhythmias.  To learn diagnostic and management skills.
  3. Review current topics in cardiovascular literature.
  4. Discuss cardiac anatomy and physiology.
  5. Name mechanism of action and toxicity of commonly-used cardiac drugs.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Electrocardiogram interpretation.
  2. Inpatient and outpatient consultaiton and rounds.
  3. Directed reading.
  4. One-on-one discussions of the pathophysiologic basis of cardiovascular diseases and therapeutic interventions.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Improved ability to interpret ECG's.
  2. Improved ability to recognize cardiac arrhythmia.
  3. Discussions with student demonstrating a basic understanding of cardiac electrophysiology.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Attendance and interest level of studewnt.
  2. Professional attributes and interpersonal skills.
  3. Degree of improvement.
  4. Ability to demonstrate understanding of ECG basics.
