Objectives of the Elective:
- Develop an understanding of
the basic rehabilitation needs of handicapped persons, and persons with
chronic neuromusculoskeletal disease.
- Become proficient in doing
complete neuromusculoskeletal examinations, including manual muscle
testing; ROM measurement; sensory, coordination and reflex testing.
- Basic introduction to electrodiagnostics.
- Develop rational method of
prescribing therapies.
- Develop familiarity with
management of amputees/prosthetics and orthotics.
Instructional Activities:
- Patient evaluation with
clinic outpatients, or hospital admissions or consults.
- Observation and participation
in NCV/EMG examinations, botox injections for
spasticity, and trigger point injections for fibromyalgia.
- Participate in team
conferences, and follow patient through therapy sessions.
- Attend orthotics/prosthetics
clinic two times a month at Dakota Clinic.
- Short presentation on topic
of interest.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
- Be able to do thorough
neurological/functional examination of patient with chronic disease, and
transcribe that exam into appropriate ordering of therapies.
- Be able to interpret a basic
NCV/EMG examination and give diagnosis.
- Be able to prescribe
necessary components of a lower extremity amputee's prosthesis.
- Be able to do complete mental
status exam and predict from that how a patient might participate in
therapy or be able to function in the community, and with what level of
supervision.
- Must have at least
satisfactory or better rating in all above areas as determined by
student's attending physician.
Criteria for Grading:
- Participation in
instructional activities and completion of rotations.
- Demonstrate acquisition of
basic knowledge as related to objectives.
