Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Application of physiology to the patient at the bedside, especially cardiopulmonary physiology.
  2. An introduction to the use of physiologic monitoring in the critically ill patient.
  3. The understanding of ethical and social issues that affect the patient and family.
  4. Role of the physician as part of the ICU team.
  5. Approach to the patient in medical crisis.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily rounds in which the student is expected to be an active participant.
  2. Individualized bedside instruction (to include an introduction to procedural skills).
  3. Call approximately every 4-5 days.
  4. Daily conferences.
  5. Selected reading materials.
·Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
  1. The student should know at the end of their rotation how to stabilize a critically ill patient.
  2. At the end of their rotation, the student should understand the indications and limitations of commonly used monitoring devices, pulmonary artery catheters, arterial lines and EKG.
  3. The student should understand the processes of coping used by patients and families experiencing critical illness.
  4. The student should be able to relate to the other members of the ICU team, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, nurses, clergy and etc.

Criteria for Grading:

A written evaluation will be submitted to the assistant dean of the southeast campus.
