Objectives of the Elective: At the end of this elective the student should be able to:

  1. Relate the basic pathophysiology, identify appropriate treatment, and select appropriate management for common metabolic and endocrine diseases (diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders, dyslipidemias, calcium disorders, and amenorrhea)..
  2. Interpret basic endocrine laboratory (gluocose, TSH, fine-needle aspiration of thyroid nodules, calcium, and PTH) and summarize the laboratory approach to more complex endocrine disorders (pituitary disorders, cushings syndrome, hyperaldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, hyperandrogenemis state, and hypogonadism).
  3. Prepare, summarize, and present clinical cases to attendings, didactic sessions, and conferences.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Endocrine consult rounds at Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
  2. Didactic sessions regarding endocrine-metabolic disorders (3-4 per week)..
  3. Endocrine-metabolism clinics at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Dakota Clinic and MeritCare Medical Center.
  4. Weekly endocrine conference at MeritCare Medical Center.
  5. Computer cases in Endocrinology.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. UND 4th year Standard Evaluation form compiled by preceptor concerning student’s performance.
  2. A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the Assistant Dean for the appropriate campus if requested..
