Objectives of the Elective:
-
Recognition of common presenting clinical features of various neoplastic
diseases.
-
Become familiar with common paraneoplastic phenomena and syndromes.
-
Diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to patients with pleural effusion,
superior vena cava syndrome, spinal cord compression, CNS metastasis, pancytopenia,
anemia, and infection in the compromised host.
-
Appreciation for the multidisciplinary approach utilizing surgery, radiation
therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy in the treatment and management
of patients with malignant diseases.

Approach to identifying etiologies responsible for anemia, leukopenia,
and thrombocytopenia.
-
Evaluation of hemostatic emergencies and coagulopathies.
-
Knowledge of relative curability of tumor types and its relationship to
state of disease.

Pain management and palliative care.
Instructional Activities:

Patient rounds.

Inpatient consultations.

Didactic lectures.

Tumor conferences.
-
Review of work-ups and presentations.

Interpretation of bone marrow biopsies, peripheral blood smears, and coagulation
data.

Appraisal of H & Ps and consults.

Ability to clearly identify disease process and pathophysiology.
