Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To be able to list the primary and secondary lesions of the skin.
  2. Recognition of the 50 most common dermatologic diseases.
  3. Recognition of an additional 25 serious, contagious, or curable uncommon diseases.
  4. An understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of the most common dermatologic diseases.
  5. The preparation of an algorithm for the differential diagnosis of skin diseases.

Instructional Activities:

  1. How to take a dermatologic history.
  2. An opportunity to examine dermatologic patients.
  3. How to do special procedures such as: a) KOH examination b) preparation and interpretation of a Tzanck smear c) Wood's light examination
  4. Basic dermatologic surgical techniques.

Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Recitation of the primary and secondary lesions of the skin.
  2. The ability to recognize the most common dermatologic diseases.
  3. The ability to formulate an algorithmic approach to the less common cutaneous diseases.
  4. The ability to discuss the etiology and pathogenesis of the most common dermatologic diseases.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Satisfactory demonstration of ability to do a dermatologic history and physical examination.
  2. Satisfactory performance of dermatologic procedures.
  3. Satisfactory completion of an oral examination demonstrating clinical competency.
