Objectives of the Elective:
-
To be able to list the primary and secondary lesions of the skin.
-
Recognition of the 50 most common dermatologic diseases.
-
Recognition of an additional 25 serious, contagious, or curable uncommon
diseases.
-
An understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of the most common dermatologic
diseases.
-
The preparation of an algorithm for the differential diagnosis of skin
diseases.
Instructional Activities:
-
How to take a dermatologic history.
-
An opportunity to examine dermatologic patients.
-
How to do special procedures such as: a) KOH examination b) preparation
and interpretation of a Tzanck smear c) Wood's light examination
-
Basic dermatologic surgical techniques.
Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
Recitation of the primary and secondary lesions of the skin.
-
The ability to recognize the most common dermatologic diseases.
-
The ability to formulate an algorithmic approach to the less common cutaneous
diseases.
-
The ability to discuss the etiology and pathogenesis of the most common
dermatologic diseases.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Satisfactory demonstration of ability to do a dermatologic history and
physical examination.
-
Satisfactory performance of dermatologic procedures.
-
Satisfactory completion of an oral examination demonstrating clinical competency.
