Offered:          Periods 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10

 

Objectives of the Elective:  To acquaint the student with the following areas of nephrology.

 

  1. General evaluation of a patient with kidney disease.
  2. Hypertension, evaluation and management.
  3. Basic fluid, electrolyte, and acid/base metabolism.
  4. Acute kidney failure, evaluation and management.
  5.  Chronic kidney failure, evaluation and management.
  6. Acute and chronic glomerular disease.
  7. Diabetic neuropathy.

 

Instructional Activities:

 

  1. Work-up/evaluation of selected hospitalized patients.
  2. Evaluation of selected clinic patients.
  3. Fluid/electrolyte metabolism and other clinical case studies.
  4. Hospital and consultation rounds.
  5. Review of assigned readings, including textbook material and current journal articles.

 

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

 

  1. Consultation write-ups and daily progress notes will be reviewed for completeness and degree of understanding of pathophysiologic process.
  2. Informal case studies will identify student preparation and understanding of basic concepts of acid/base, fluid/electrolyte metabolism and other clinical problems in nephrology.
  3. Assigned readings will be informally reviewed.
  4. It is expected that students will show improvement in the understanding of concepts addressed.

 

Criteria for Grading:

 

  1. Student must perform satisfactorily or higher in case presentations.
  2. Student must maintain proper degree of professionalism regarding patient/record confidentiality and interactions with patients and staff.
  3. Student must show improvement in nephrology knowledge base.
  4. Honors grade will require outstanding performance in all areas, including use of current literature in addressing patient problems in the hospital or clinic.
