Positions: 2 per period (accompanied by a resident)

Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To become familiar with the diagnostic approach in the discipline of infectious diseases.
  2. To evaluate and plan therapy for inpatients with infectious disease problems.
  3. To become acquainted with the clinical diagnostic microbiology laboratory and its methods.
  4. To correlate clinical findings with laboratory results.
  5. To provide a broad exposure to the clinical problems encountered in internal medicine and to define the role of the infectious diseases physician in this relationship.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Rounds on infectious disease consults at MeritCare Hospital
  2. Some time seeing new outpatient consults in MeritCare Clinic and possibly VA Clinic.
  3. Correlation of clinical findings and microbiologic laboratory results by the director of the microbiology laboratory and infectious disease staff physician.
  4. Attendance at all internal medicine teaching conferences and grand rounds.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Quality of case presentations and written consultation notes on patients worked up by the student will be the basis of evaluation. No objective test will be administered. Students will receive a grade of honor, pass, or fail.
  2. A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the Assistant Dean for the appropriate campus.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Must receive a satisfactory or above rating on four out of five of the following clinical competency categories: data gathering, interaction, problem solving, patient management, and psychosocial.
  2. Must receive a satisfactory or above rating on overall clinical competence.
