Objectives of the Elective:
-
Describe the approach to the outpatient management of patients with pulmonary
disease.
-
Become competent in pulmonary function test evaluation.
-
Develop the skills to interpret chest radiograph and chest CT scans, and
correlate this information with clinical findings..
-
Expand the students' knowledge base in pulmonary medicine.
-
Develop skills in the application of pathophysiology to management of pulmonary
dysfunction.
-
Describe pulmonary preoperative evaluation.
Instructional Activities:
-
Attend a pulmonary clinic two days per week.
-
Work in the pulmonary function laboratory and interpret pulmonary function
tests and arterial blood gases.
-
Round with senior resident and staff on all pulmonary consultations.

Formal and informal didactic sessions with senior residents and staff (mainly
covering topics which originate from patient seen).
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

Demonstrate competency in elementary pulmonary function test interpretation.

Demonstrate appropriate patient evluation skills, which include all aspects
of history, physical examination, x-ray interpretation and physiologic
testing. Evaluated by preceptor observation of specific skills.

Appropriate performance of pulmonary consultation, inpatient and outpatient,
commensurate with their training. Evaluated by preceptor observation.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Appropriate attendance at all clinics, rounds and planned teaching sessions.

Demonstration of competency in evaluating patients using method of history/physical
examination and lab and x-ray procedures.
-
Satisfactory preceptor Likert rating in all areas of clinical competency
which are appropriate for medical students.

Preceptor Likert Scale grading of communication skills with staff and patients.
