IMED 9131 (Elective) IMED 9197 (Acting Internship)

Offered: All periods; 1 student/period
Objectives of the Elective: Following successful
completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

Evaluate acute medical patients admitted to the hospital, with follow up
through discharge.

Participate in preoperative evaluation and postoperative management of
acute surgical cases.

Participate in the care of critically ill patients in the intensive care
unit.
-
Perform a complete history and physical examination with knowledge of differential
diagnosis skills.

Outline discharge planning, including assessment of level of care required
post discharge for prevention of recurrence of disease.
Instructional Activities:
-
Dictation of admission and progress notes as well as admission and discharge
planning of patients admitted to the hospitalist service.

Emergency room evaluations.
-
Critical care training will be offered by hospitalists covering intensivist
shifts.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
The student should be able to perform a detailed history and physical examination
in a timely and accurate manner with accurate data interpretation, arriving
at a final and differential diagnosis.

The student should be able to accurately present a case presentation in
a succinct and pertinent way demonstrating good patient/physician relationship.
Criteria for Grading:
-
The student's performance in demonstrating a history and physical examination.
-
The student's attendance and level of interest, interpersonal skills, and
patient care.

The student's level of proficiency demonstrated in diagnosis and treatment
of acute care patients on the hospital service.

Following completion of the Acting Internship, the standard evaluation
form will be completed by the preceptor and sent to the assistant dean
of the southwest campus..
