Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Become familiar with rehabilitation needs of patients with neurological, muscular, or orthopedic disabilities.
  2. Be able to complete neuromuscular exam and mental status exam pertinent to rehab patients.
  3. Learn basic prescription writing for therapies and become familiar with therapeutic modalities.
  4. Basic introduction to electrodiagnostic studies.
  5. Basic introduction to assessment of neurogenic bladder with urodynamic studies.
  6. Introduction to outpatient sports medicine and chronic pain.
  7. Introduction to orthotics and prosthetics.
  8. Become familiar with team approach to patient care.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Inpatient evaluation; hospital admissions and consults.
  2. Outpatient clinic evaluations including chronic pain, sports medicine, injuries, Workers Compensation injuries.
  3. Observation and participation in orthotics, prosthetics clinics.
  4. Observation and participation in electrodiagnostic studies.
  5. Participation in urodynamic studies of neurogenic bladder.
  6. Instruction in arthrocentesis and trigger point injections.
  7. Participation in rehab conferences, therapy sessions.
  8. Instructor will provide weekly discussions on pertinent rehab topics.
  9. Student to give one short oral presentation on topic of interest.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Be able to complete thorough neuromuscular and functional examination or patients, and transcribe that exam into appropriate ordering of therapies.
  2. Be able to understand basics of electrodiagnostic studies.
  3. Be able to write basic therapy prescriptions for inpatient stroke, CHI, SCI, and orthopedic rehab patients.
  4. Demonstrate basic understanding of evaluation and management of outpatient chronic pain and sports medicine patients.
  5. Accept student performances based on demonstrating satisfactory performance in complete neuromuscular/functional examination of handicapped individuals basic prescription writing, understanding electrodiagnostic studies, and required presentation of rehab topic.
  6. Instructor will give written evaluation of student's performance upon completion of rotation.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Participation in instructional activities.
  2. Complete objectives.
  3. Satisfy written standard of performance.
