Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Expose the student to clinical aspects of nephrology.
  2. Review the basis physiology and physiopathology of the kidneys.
  3. Understand current approach to patients with nephrology problems including hypertension.
  4. Management of patients with acute and chronic renal failure and basic fluid and electrolyte problems.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Twice a day patient rounds.
  2. Once a week review of articles in the literature.
  3. Discuss nephrology topics, mostly on pertinent cases in the service.
  4. See patients with nephrology problems as requested by the primary physicians.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Daily evaluation on case presentation.
  2. Evaluation on topic discussion.
  3. Evaluation of literature research when such topics are assigned.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Students will be graded depending on the appropriateness of the case presentation.
  2. Punctuality.
  3. Relation to personnel and staff.
  4. Ability to search the literature and extract appropriate information on topics assigned.
