Objectives of the Elective:
-
Detection and management of adult cardiac disease.
-
Management of patients with cardiologic problems in the intensive care
unit.
-
Familiarization with techniques and cardiological diagnosis including stress
testing, echocardiography, nuclear imaging, pacemaker insertion and cardiac
catheterization, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, insertion
of coronary, renal and peripheral stents.
Instructional Activities:
-
Participating in evaluation of patients undergoing cardiac consultation
and patients admitted to my service. This can include both inpatients and
outpatients.

Assisting in various cardiological examinations such as stress taking,
insertion of Swan-Ganz catheter, temporary and permanent pacemakers and
cardiac catheterization procedures.

Evaluating and assisting in pre- and postoperative patients undergoing
cardiac surgery.

Specific readings in standard textbooks or medical journals will be made
and correlated with the student's experience.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

Ability to present clinical evaluation, indicate amount of information
needed and outline of therapy planned.

Technical ability in performing procedures.
-
Evaluate indications for procedures.
-
Ability to research and present selected topics on cardiology.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Thoroughness of history taking and physical examination.
-
Ability to interpret EKGs, chest x-rays and laboratory studies in diagnosing
cardiac disease.
-
Ability to present rationale for further testing and therapy.

Eagerness to learn.
