Objectives of the Elective:
- Bedside and clinical evaluation of chest disorders. (Physical exam
of normal and abnormal findings).
- Ability to diagnose chest diseases, know normal structure and function,
and detailed knowledge of physiologic and pathologic alterations as well
as etiologies and pathogenic mechanisms behind them.
- Gain expertise in radiographic interpretation of the chest, radiographs,
computed tomography, and angiography.
- Gain expertise in interpretation of pulmonary function testing exercise
physiology, and clinical application.
- Experience in inpatient and clinic-based consultation.
- Exposure to pulmonary medicine procedures; thoracentesis, pulmonary
arterial catheterization, chest thoracostomy and bronchoscopy.
- Critical care medicine/ventilator management.
Instructional Activities:
- Daily morning working rounds.
- Formal lectures covering the following topics: ARDS, pneumonia, asthma,
PE, COPD, pleural effusion, lung cancer, PFTs, and TB.
- Review pertinent specimens with pathologist and radiologist.
- Supervised hands-on management of service patients.
- Rotation through pulmonary function lab with study performed to student.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
Overall pulmonary medicine knowledge at end of rotation by evaluation
of patient and delineation of diagnosis and treatment.
Criteria for Grading:
- Progress notes - SOAP. (Assessment is most important and write-up history
and physical and assessment on patient at least once a week.)
- Personal and patient interaction.
- Willingness to work and eagerness to learn.
- Test (75 questions) may be given.
