Objectives of the Elective:
To acquaint the student with the following areas of Nephrology:

Hypertension - evaluation and management.
-
Basic fluid, electrolyte and acid/base metabolism.
-
Acute renal failure - evaluation and management.
-
Chronic renal failure, including dialysis and transplantation.
Instructional Activities:
-
Work up/evaluation of hospitalized patients.
-
Evaluation of selected clinic patients.
-
Fluid/electrolyte and acid/base case studies.
-
Daily hospital and consultation rounds.
-
Review of assigned readings including core readings in basic nephrology
text.
Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
Consultative dictations and daily progress notes will be reviewed for completeness,
degree of understanding of pathophysiologic processes and timeliness.

Informal case studies will address student preparation and understanding
of basic concepts of acid/base and fluid/electrolyte metabolism.
-
Assigned readings will be reviewed on rounds.
-
Student will show improvement in understanding of concepts addressed.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Student must perform satisfactorily or higher in discussions and case presentations.
-
Must perform satisfactorily in primary care role in hospital including
maintaining proper degree of professionalism regarding patient/record confidentiality
and interaction with patients and staff.

Must perform satisfactorily in case discussions.
-
Must show progressive improvement in overall knowledge base in nephrology.
-
Honors grade will require outstanding overall performance in all areas
including use of recent reference literature in patient care and consult
notes.
