Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Our number one objective is to allow a medical student to be comfortable in an Intensive Care Unit. We hope to accomplish this by allowing the student to learn about all areas of ICU. This includes understanding the anatomy physiology, pharmacology, etc., of all organ systems.
  2. We also include intensive work on didactics as well as clinical experience with invasive hemodynamic monitoring.
  3. The student should be able to write critical care notes and interpret hemodynamic data and blood gas analysis.
  4. Prepare one case presentation with our help.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily teaching rounds at 6:30 a.m. with all anesthesiologists.
  2. Individual daily lessons including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, etc.
  3. Insertion of all invasive lines and also intubations.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Be familiar with and able to start IVs, arterial lines, central lines, etc., with our guidance and help.
  2. Be able to recall future material to decide clinical courses of our patients. This would include ventilator settings and control of hemodynamics using inotropic and vasodilators.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Knowledge of previous didactic work in anatomy physiology, pharmacology, etc., and be able to relearn these areas as it related to the Intensive Care Unit.
  2. Ability to work well with fellow health care personnel.
  3. Present a case and discuss this with attending staff.
  4. Show an interest in doing a good job with ability to learn.
