Objectives of the Elective:
-
Experience in complete cardiovascular examination.
-
Experience in interpretation of EKGs and stress EKGs.

Understanding of indications for cardiac catheterization invasive studies.
-
Understanding of diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, valvular
heart disease, hypertensive heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and pericardial
diseases.

Understanding of echocardiography both M mode and cross sectional.
-
Understanding of hemodynamics in relation to critical care medicine.
Instructional Activities:
-
Rotate through the cardiac catheterization laboratory to include participation
to invasive studies.

Involvement with the interpretation of studies from the echocardiography
laboratory.
-
Participation in hospital rounds and consultations.
-
Discussion of topics of interest once or twice a week.
-
Participation in intensive care rounds, procedures and patient care.
-
Integration with the cardiopulmonary service with interaction with daily
lectures, discussions, rounds, etc.

Night and weekend call as determined by the preceptor.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
Daily supervision of activities, ward rounds, and consultations.
-
Student should be able to perform consultation promptly, make diagnosis,
suggest therapy after discussing with faculty.

Should be able to interpret the EKGs daily, daily discussion about EKG
morphology and arrhythmias.

At the end of the rotation student should have knowledge in various aspects
of cardiovascular diseases.

Students are required to do literature search and discuss topics of interest
once or twice a week.
Criteria for Grading:
A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant
dean for the appropriate campus.
