Objectives of the Elective:

The infectious disease rotation will be directed toward developing knowledge
and skills in the application of diagnostic techniques,drug therapy, and
infection control.
-
The training will develop professional practice patterns and habits consistent
with a rational approach to the treatment of infectious disease in the
context of a multidisciplinary program.

The infectious disease rotation will encompass patients seen by the attending
infectious disease specialist(s) and the infectious disease team.
The infectious disease team will/may consist of the attending infectious
disease specialist, a physician resident, and a medical student.
Rounds will be made daily Monday-Friday with the attending physician.
Instructional Activities:

The student will be a part of an interdisciplinary team whose experience
and expertise is Infectious Disease and Pulmonary Medicine.

Teaching rounds will be held daily by Dr. Seth.

The student will be expected to participate in teaching rounds at least
three times a week.
-
Core reading will be assigned to the student prior to the rotation.
Supplemental reading will be assigned on a case by case basis.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

Upon completion of the rotation the student shall be able to do a cost-effective
patient work-up and organize the differential diagnosis, including the
affected organ system(s) and most likely pathogen(s), as well as prioritize
diagnostic aids.

Based upon the differential diagnosis, the student shall be able to develop
a therapeutic drug regimen based upon efficacy, safety, and cost.
Criteria for Grading:
-
The student must have a satisfactory rating or above on six of the seven
clinical competencies listed on the Fourth Year Student Clinical
Performance Evaluation.
