Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Gain experience in the practice of general internal medicine in a hospital setting, primarily at St. Alexius Medical Center, but also at MedCenter One.
  2. Depending on the preceptor, there may be some clinic experience.
  3. Develop skills in differential diagnosis.
  4. Develop skills in interpreting laboratory tests and x-rays.

Instructional Activities:

  1. At Mid Dakota Clinic there will be a focus on an outpatient population as we have hospitalist services..
  2. See patients in the clinic at the discretion of the preceptor.
  3. Students to attend all hospital internal medicine conferences, seminars or guest lecture programs.
  4. See patients in the Emergency Room at the discretion of the preceptor when he is on Emergency Room call.
  5. Reading the material (textbook or current literature) appropriate to patient problems is strongly recommended.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Perform accurate history and physical examination as verified by the preceptor.
  2. Present case summaries to preceptor with differential diagnosis.
  3. Develop and present a plan for diagnostic tests and therapeutic plan.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Familiarity with and review of one of the standard textbooks of internal medicine--Cecil, Harrison, etc.
  2. At the preceptor's discretion, write short papers dealing with the problems seen in clinic patients.
