COMMUNITY INTENSIVE INTERNAL MEDICINE

Offered:   All periods; 1 student/period

Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Develop and refine student skills in general history taking, physical examination, and plans for patient management.
  2. Allow the student exposure to and education in the evaluation and management of patients in various community settings, including prison inmates, ICU patients, etc.
  3. Provide the student the opportunity to act and function as a resident with order counter signature.
  4. Develop student skills in reporting, interpretation, and management of internal medicine patients.
  5. Demonstrate the skills in evidence-based medicine.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Written histories and physicals on two to three inpatients or outpatients per week.
  2. Active outpatient learning through patient evaluation and management in the clinic and community settings.
  3. Presentation of all patients assigned to the student on admission and subsequent followup to the preceptor.
  4. Attendance at community and hospital conferences when available.
  5. Review of selected references and a major medical text to support an evidence-based perspective of patient management.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Perform accurate history and physical examinations as verified by the preceptor.
  2. Present case summaries to preceptor with differential diagnosis.
  3. Develop and present a plan for diagnostic tests and therapeutic plan.
  4. Satisfactory or higher performance on write-ups, presentations, and activities during attending rounds and preceptor sessions as judged by preceptor and documented on evaluation form.

Criteria for Grading:


A written evaluation of the student's performance will be sent to the assistant dean of the Southwest Campus.
