Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Understand the concept of triage in a mass casualty situation. During a mass casualty situation implement appropriate ATLS interventions.
  2. Understand the treatment, diagnosis and evaluation of environmental emergencies unique to military personnel; e.g., heat/cold emergencies, chemical exposures, envenomations, radiation injuries, near drowning.
  3. Understand the treatment and diagnosis of infectious diseases unique to military personnel (including immunization concepts).
  4. Understand occupational and public medicine concepts; e.g., water purification, sanitation, ergonomics, hearing assessment.
  5. Understand flight physiology as it pertains to the pilot, soldier, and patient.
  6. Perform and become proficient at physical examination, electrocardiogram interpretation, and interpretation of basic laboratory studies.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Morning and evening lectures from one half to one hour on selected military medicine topics pertaining to patient care.
  2. Concurrent instructional activity as care is rendered during sick call, physical examinations and assessment, and inpatients.
  3. Each student will be required to present one formal lecture to the medical staff on a topic assigned.

Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Students will be rated on four specific categories: knowledge, professional conduct, skills, and attendance at sick call and lectures.
  2. A written evaluation will be presented to the student and assistant dean of the respective medical school campus.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Medical knowledge, clinical competence, professional conduct, and skill.
  2. Attendance at lectures.
  3. Quality of individual student presentation.
