Purpose: To gain knowledge of primary care sports medicine.


Objectives of the Elective: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will:

 

1.         Gain exposure to primary care sports medicine and musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment.

2.         Gain exposure and develop skills in evaluation of musculoskeletal complaints, fracture cre, injections, rehabilitation, and return-to-activity decisions.


Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will take part in the following experiences under the supervision/direction of the preceptor/attending physician:

 

1.         Patient care in office and in training rooms at Minot State University and Minot High School;

2.         Sporting events coverage;

3.         Training room coverage with ATCs;

4.         Physical therapy observation;

5.         Directed reading

6.         Design and present one in-service program to athletic training/physical therapy staff.


Assessment: Determination of competency regarding objectives:

 

1.         Under supervision, the student will be able to appropriately evaluate and manage an injured athlete.

2.         Under supervision, the student will be able to appropriately evaluate musculoskeletal patients in the clinic setting.

3.         The student will develop appropriate H&P skills for the common musculoskeletal complaints.


Criteria for Grading: During and at the end of this elective, the preceptor will:

 

1.         Evaluate the student’s in-service presentation to the athletic training/physical therapy staff.

 

2.         By direct observation, judge the student’s ability to perform an appropriate musculoskeletal history and physical examination.

3.         By direct observation, judge the student’s ability to appropriately evaluate and mange an injured athlete.

4.         Complete and return to the campus dean the evaluation form for senior student clinical performance.
