Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To develop an appreciation of family medicine as a specialty concerned with the total care of the individual and the family.
  2. To understand the role of the family physician within the health care system as a primary care specialist and as a "gatekeeper" to entry into other disciplines.
  3. To gain practical experience seeing, evaluating, and beginning to manage the wide scope of problems the family practitioner sees on a day-to-day basis.
  4. To gain firsthand knowledge of the responsibilities as a family medicine resident, experience the model family medicine center, and work closely with the chief resident and faculty as a role model in family medicine.

Instructional Activities:

  1. The student will be involved in working up patients in the Family Medicine Center and inpatients on the family medicine service. He/she will participate in any procedures involved and will, if possible, do the procedure at the discretion of and under the direct supervision of the faculty.
  2. The student will round daily on all CFM inpatients and consultations in conjunction with the chief resident and the attending faculty.
  3. The student will be on call in conjunction with the chief resident.
  4. The student will be encouraged to research an area of interest and present one of the noon conferences at the CFM with the chief/faculty as moderator.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Students will see patients, both inpatient and outpatient on a daily basis in conjunction with the chief resident and the faculty attending.
  2. Students will participate in all activities at the CFM including conferences (on a daily basis), hospital meetings, and resident meetings.
  3. Faculty will meet with the student at the onset of the rotation and at its termination to review goals and see if they have been met.
  4. Evaluation of the student's performance will be completed by faculty and the chief resident, and will include the extent of skill and level of involvement in the rotation.
  5. Evaluation of the chief resident and the faculty in addition to the rotation will indicate the successful attainment of the objectives previously outlined.
