Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Develop the skills to evaluate patients presenting to the ER with trauma and medical emergencies.
  2. Learn and practice emergency techniques and skills including CPR, suturing, orthopedic immobilization, etc.
  3. Expose the student to a wide variety of common medical problems and encourage participation in diagnosis and treatment.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Patient assignment and review of patients with emergency physician.
  2. Assigned reading; i.e. ATLS, ACLS, APLS manuals.
  3. Assigned emergency room topic presentations or discussions.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Discussions will be held concerning each patient seen by the student.
  2. Students will be asked to keep a record of patients encountered.
  3. Students will be asked to read specific materials and these will be discussed with the faculty; i.e. ATLS, ACLS, APLS information.
  4. Students will be evaluated each week and a written final evaluation will be given to the assistant dean of the northwest campus at the end of the elective.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Availability.
  2. Relation with patients.
  3. Approach to patient's problem.
  4. Clinical skills.
