Family Medicine  

 

Location of Elective:              MeritCare/Bemidji

Period(s) offered and number of students per period:         All periods/1 student per period

 

Purpose:         Advance the student’s knowledge and skills in the setting of full scope family medicine.

 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1.   Evaluate and manage patients in the full scope of family practice.

2.   Complete workups in the office/hospital.

3.   Discuss preventative health maintenance with all age groups.

4.   Perform office procedures.

5.   Participate in deliveries.

6.   Participate in ER shifts.

7.   Give organized patient presentations of office and hospital patients.

8.   Understand the role of family practice in the continuum of medicine.

 

Instructional Activities: During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

 

1.   Outpatient and inpatient management.

2.   X-ray and EKG rounds.

3.   Daily subject discussions of assigned readings.

4.   Infant deliveries.

5.   Discussion of medical economics and the importance of medical record keeping.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

 

1.   Student’s history and physical exams.

2.   Student’s ability to develop problem lists and plans.

3.   Student’s communication with physicians and support staff.

4.   Student’s knowledge base with respect to inpatient and outpatient problems.

  1. Student’s ability to “triage” on call days and off call days.
  2. Submit a summative evaluation on a form approved by CEC.
