Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Exposure of the student to the primary care aspects of sports medicine.
  2. Develop skills in the evaluation and management of acute injuries including triage, emergency care and transportation, and final definitive diagnosis and care.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Sports medicine lectures of the family practice residency program.
  2. Coverage of sporting events with preceptor.
  3. Patient work-ups at Family Practice Center or UND training rooms.
  4. Directed readings in sports medicine.
  5. Observation in UND Center for Sports Medicine.
  6. Literature review of a selected topic.
  7. Teach one in-service for athletic training students.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Student will be able to appropriately evaluate and manage, under supervision, an injured athlete.
  2. Student will follow progress of an injury from occurrence to return-to-play.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Attendance and interest.
  2. Completion of assigned reading relating to course objective.
  3. Completion of an in-service for athletic training students.
  4. Demonstration of procedural skills.
  5. Professional behavior.
A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant dean for the appropriate campus.
