Objectives of the Elective:

Exposure of the student to the primary care aspects of sports medicine.
-
Develop skills in the evaluation and management of acute injuries including
triage, emergency care and transportation, and final definitive diagnosis
and care.
Instructional Activities:
-
Sports medicine lectures of the family practice residency program.
-
Coverage of sporting events with preceptor.
-
Patient work-ups at Family Practice Center or UND training rooms.
-
Directed readings in sports medicine.
-
Observation in UND Center for Sports Medicine.
-
Literature review of a selected topic.
-
Teach one in-service for athletic training students.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

Student will be able to appropriately evaluate and manage, under supervision,
an injured athlete.
-
Student will follow progress of an injury from occurrence to return-to-play.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Attendance and interest.
-
Completion of assigned reading relating to course objective.
-
Completion of an in-service for athletic training students.
-
Demonstration of procedural skills.
-
Professional behavior.
A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant
dean for the appropriate campus.
