Objectives of the Elective:
- Experience scope of care in a rural family medicine clinic.
- Develop an awareness of personal strengths and limitations.
- Refine data collection and problem solving skills.
- Become comfortable with diagnosis and management in the context of
limited resources.
Instructional Activities:
- Function as an intern under supervision of medical staff.
- Take call with the preceptor.
- Hallway chats: Discussion of topics related to current cases.
- Participate as a physician community member.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
- Consistent attendance at appropriate opportunities for experience.
- Demonstrate developing confidence and knowing when to ask for help.
- Demonstrate improvement in data collection and problem solving.
- Demonstrate confidence with diffential diagnosis based on history and
physical findings and present plan for further work-up based on local resources.
Criteria for Grading:
- Attendance
- Subjective assessment based on openness to share thought processes.
- Chart review and verbal presentation of patients.
