Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Experience scope of care in a rural family medicine clinic.
  2. Develop an awareness of personal strengths and limitations.
  3. Refine data collection and problem solving skills.
  4. Become comfortable with diagnosis and management in the context of limited resources.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Function as an intern under supervision of medical staff.
  2. Take call with the preceptor.
  3. Hallway chats: Discussion of topics related to current cases.
  4. Participate as a physician community member.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Consistent attendance at appropriate opportunities for experience.
  2. Demonstrate developing confidence and knowing when to ask for help.
  3. Demonstrate improvement in data collection and problem solving.
  4. Demonstrate confidence with diffential diagnosis based on history and physical findings and present plan for further work-up based on local resources.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Attendance
  2. Subjective assessment based on openness to share thought processes.
  3. Chart review and verbal presentation of patients.
