Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To gain proficiency in the initial assessment and management of the patient presenting with urgent/emergent medical or traumatic injuries.
  2. To become familiar with and comfortable in the management of emergency patient care with a special emphasis on meeting patient expectations from a public relations as well as a medical standpoint.

Instructional Activities:

  1. This elective is available to all students interested in trauma and emergency room medicine. Although offered during all periods, no more than two students will be accepted during any single period. Students will individually work 40 hours per week and two weekends per block in the emergency room generally in 8-12 hour shifts. The selection of these periods will be coordinated through Dr. Raymond. Each student will be expected to observe, assist, or perform the different emergency room procedures and techniques under the supervision of the emergency room physicians. An attending faculty will be available at all times for the discussion of emergency room patients, problems, and techniques.
  2. Formal presentations with regards to the care of the multiple trauma victim. The patient in hemorrhagic shock and risk management will be given. Informal presentations with reference to all aspects of advanced trauma life support as well as regional anesthesia and plastic surgical techniques will be emphasized.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Ongoing student/teacher interaction and direct observation of the student in the performance of minor surgical and orthopedic tasks.
  2. A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant dean for the northeast campus.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Relationship with patients and staff.
  2. Approach to patients' problems.
  3. Clinical skills.
