Purpose:  To gain experience in assessing and delivering outpatient medical care in a student health clinic setting.

 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1.      Assess common medical/psychiatric conditions seen in the college student population.

 

2.      Demonstrate focused interview techniques and formulate treatment plans.

 

3.      Demonstrate the ability to order appropriate labs, x-rays, and referrals and clinical correlation of the above.

 

4.      Demonstrate the ability to interpret and correlate the findings and test results in the management of the patients.

 

5.      Demonstrate ability to perform standard outpatient procedures.

 

Instructional Activities: During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

 

1.      During the regular academic year, there are approximately 5000 student contacts at Hendrix Health Center, presenting with medical and psychiatric conditions which would be common in any busy general clinic.  Office experience would be the main focus.  No after-hours or inpatient care.

 

2.      Interviewing patients, formulating treatment plans, ordering and interpreting lab/x-ray, procedures.

 

3.      Performing history and physical exams (general, pre-op, sports, foreign travel/student exchange, pre-employment).

 

4.      Educating patients regarding topics of health and wellness.

 

5.      Students will give one medical presentation to Hendrix staff during the rotation.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

 

1.      Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS 4th year evaluation form.

 

2.      Assess student’s demonstrated skill in evaluating and treating common problems seen in the student health setting.

 

3.      Assess student’s interview skills and patient exams.

 

4.      Assess student’s skills in common office procedures.

 

5.      Assess student’s oral presentation given to staff.
