Offered:   All periods (One student or resident per period)

Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Expose the student to a high volume of sports medicine problems.
  2. Develop skills in outpatient orthopedics including fracture care, injections, and reductions.
  3. Evaluate and treat common musculoskeletal problems..
  4. Develop skills in the evaluation and management of acute injuries includuing triage, emergency care and transportation, and final definitive diagnosis and care.
  5. Understand relationship between physicians, athletic trainers, therapists, and coaches in sports medicine model.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Patient work-ups at Meritcare Sports Medicine, Minnesota State University-Moorhead, or Fargo Public Schools.
  2. Coverage of sporting events with preceptor.
  3. Weekly training room coverage at Minnesota State University and Fargo Public Schools.
  4. Directed readings in sports medicine.
  5. Observation in MeritCare Sports Medicine.
  6. Literature review of a selected topic.
  7. Teach one inservice for athletic training students or medical staff.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Student will be able to appropriately evaluate and manage, under supervision, an injured athlete.
  2. Student will follow progress of an injury from occurrence to return-to-play.
  3. Student will develop appropriate H & P skills for common musculoskeletal  problems.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Attendance and interest.
  2. Completion of assigned reading relating to course objectives.
  3. Completion of an inservice for athletic training students or medical staff.
  4. Demonstration of procedural skills.
  5. Professional behavior.
  6. A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant dean for the appropriate campus.
