Offered: All periods (One student or resident per period)
Objectives of the Elective:
-
Expose the student to a high volume of sports medicine problems.
-
Develop skills in outpatient orthopedics including fracture care, injections,
and reductions.
-
Evaluate and treat common musculoskeletal problems..
-
Develop skills in the evaluation and management of acute injuries includuing
triage, emergency care and transportation, and final definitive diagnosis
and care.
-
Understand relationship between physicians, athletic trainers, therapists,
and coaches in sports medicine model.
Instructional Activities:
-
Patient work-ups at Meritcare Sports Medicine, Minnesota State University-Moorhead,
or Fargo Public Schools.
-
Coverage of sporting events with preceptor.
-
Weekly training room coverage at Minnesota State University and Fargo Public
Schools.
-
Directed readings in sports medicine.
-
Observation in MeritCare Sports Medicine.
-
Literature review of a selected topic.
-
Teach one inservice for athletic training students or medical staff.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
Student will be able to appropriately evaluate and manage, under supervision,
an injured athlete.
-
Student will follow progress of an injury from occurrence to return-to-play.
-
Student will develop appropriate H & P skills for common musculoskeletal
problems.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Attendance and interest.
-
Completion of assigned reading relating to course objectives.
-
Completion of an inservice for athletic training students or medical staff.
-
Demonstration of procedural skills.
-
Professional behavior.
-
A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant
dean for the appropriate campus.
