Objectives of the Elective:
-
Introduction of student to activities of the emergency room.
-
Introduction and practice of ACLS; review of ACLS manual.
-
Introduction and practice of ATLS; review of ATLS manual.
-
Increase procedures, skills; i.e., suturing, spinal taps, NG tubes, IVs,
nasotracheal intubations, arterial puncture, regional anesthesia and other
procedures.
-
The student will increase his ability to examine a patient and form a differential
diagnosis.
-
EKG reading, x-ray reading, interpretation of lab and arterial blood gases.
-
To supply the student with information about emergency medicine as a specialty
(i.e., scope of practice, residency program and their evaluation).

To assist the student in residency selection and evaluation if pertinent.

Case discussions and a presentation.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

Weekly discussions of selected Rosen chapters.

Phone call follow-up on patients seen by student.

Successful performance of procedures.
-
Case presentation.
Criteria for Grading:
A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant
dean for the appropriate campus.
