Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To familiarize the student with all aspects of emergency medicine through active participation (under supervision) in all patient encounters.
  2. The student will be given priority in management of all trauma cases (under supervision) and all medical emergencies (under supervision).
  3. The emphasis will be on rapid, concise evaluation and disposition.
  4. Pre-hospital management of patients.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Student will be given an instructional lecture series addressing topics deemed as important by the American College of Emergency Physicians Committee for Undergraduate Education in Emergency Medicine - to be picked up at the southwest campus.
  2. Suture lab will be conducted with each student.
  3. Essentials of ATLS/ACLS/PALS.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Presentation and discussion of contact cases with ER physician.
  2. Review of assigned emergency medicine reading material.
  3. Participation in monthly emergency medicine lecture series.
  4. Formal grading at end of rotation.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Attendance.
  2. Eagerness to learn.
  3. Demonstration of basic clinical and diagnostic skills at completion of rotation.
