Objectives of the Elective:
-
To familiarize the student with all aspects of emergency medicine through
active participation (under supervision) in all patient encounters.
-
The student will be given priority in management of all trauma cases (under
supervision) and all medical emergencies (under supervision).

The emphasis will be on rapid, concise evaluation and disposition.
-
Pre-hospital management of patients.
Instructional Activities:
-
Student will be given an instructional lecture series addressing topics
deemed as important by the American College of Emergency Physicians Committee
for Undergraduate Education in Emergency Medicine - to be picked up at
the southwest campus.

Suture lab will be conducted with each student.
-
Essentials of ATLS/ACLS/PALS.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

Presentation and discussion of contact cases with ER physician.
-
Review of assigned emergency medicine reading material.
-
Participation in monthly emergency medicine lecture series.
-
Formal grading at end of rotation.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Attendance.
-
Eagerness to learn.
-
Demonstration of basic clinical and diagnostic skills at completion of
rotation.
