Objectives of the Elective:

  2. To encourage international exchanges of medical information and techniques.
  3. To provide students with an experience in alternatively funded delivery of medical services.
  4. To provide an individual education plan which may include working with aboriginal people, Albion Street HIV-AIDS project, or a rural community placement in Queensland.
  5. To enhance an understanding of rural medicine as it is practiced in Queensland if the rural site is selected.
  6. When appropriate, provide a brief internship at a family practice center, surgery, country practice, or in an urban practice center in Sydney, Australia.

Instructional Activities:

  1. There will be daily participation in a clinic, hospital, surgery, and/or making home visits when appropriate. This will be directed by the preceptor. Attendance is mandatory.
  2. Individual readings from a text book provided by the Department of Family Medicine. Specific articles will be provided to supplement clinical materials as directed by the preceptor.
  3. At the conclusion of the rotation, the student will complete evaluation forms and meet for an exit interview with the sponsoring preceptor.
  4. When appropriate the student will complete the evaluation system developed by the Division of Community Medicine at Queensland.
  5. Students may be requested to provide housing and "mentorship" for an Australian student if they select North Dakota for a rotation from their Medical School in Australia.

Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. The student will complete a four-week in-clinic or hospital rotation with a faculty member in Australia.
  2. The student will attend all didactic conferences which may be made available through their preceptor in Australia.
  3. The student will submit to the University of North Dakota Department of Family Medicine copies of the evaluation completed by the attending physician in Australia.
  4. The Department of Family Medicine in the United States and the preceptors in Australia will work together jointly to make this a positive growth experience for students interested in family medicine/general practice on an international scope.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Must have satisfactory rating or above provided by the community preceptor in Australia. (80%)
  2. The student will serve as an ambassador of the United States to Australia. Hopefully, exchanges between the two countries will continue with the support and discussion of the exchanging students. The student will meet with students from the James Cook University "rural club" to facilitate such discussions. (20%).

Special Note:

This elective is arranged through a one-to-one communication with preceptors in Australia. Faculty members at the University of North Dakota cannot guarantee that sites will be available. An application to the Department of Family Medicine must be received six months prior to the proposed elective. The elective is contingent upon the preceptors in Australia accepting students. Therefore, advance planning and contact with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine is strongly advised.
