Purpose:  Learn to apply knowledge to everyday situations in a community family practice setting.

Objectives of the Elective:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Improve presentation and medical record documentation skills and demonstrate application of those improved skills.
  2. Expand and deepen communication skills with patients and staff.
  3. Demonstrate improved diagnostic acumen and ability to develop appropriate differential diagnoses.
  4. Describe an understanding of important aspects of the business of medicine.
  5. Demonstrate confidence in the evaluation and management of a variety of medical problems seen in the community family medicine clinical setting.
  6. By involvement, have the opportunity to appreciate the enjoyment of the practice of medicine.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Medical care of all age groups
  2. Addiction counseling and treatment
  3. A variety of patient settings; inpatient/outpatient/nursing home care
  4. Procedures--mole removal/sutures/simple fracture care/joint injections, and other typical family physician outpatient procedures
  5. Reading appropriate references and discussion with attending physician and peers

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. By direct observation, evaluate and provide feedback to the student regarding:. a) data gathering practices; b) communication skills; c) documentation skills; d) diagnostic reasoning skills; e) procedural skills; and, f) clinical management and patient education skills.
